Dear friends of the Sycamore Trust,

Welcome to our latest weekly bulletin, with details of a number of really important dates for your diary in June. We're also looking for staff for our evening youth clubs, if anyone would like to earn a little extra cash for the summer holidays! Don't forget to check our website at www.sycamoretrust.org.uk for all the latest information, which you will also see if you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and Instagram.

Planning for the future

Places are filling up fast for the important event that we're hosting on Wednesday 12th June. It's a question that no-one likes to ask, but what happens to the young people in our care when we're no longer here to look after them? It's a difficult subject to discuss but it's a question that cannot be ignored. We're really pleased to say that we can go some way to helping to provide the answer thanks to our friends from Mullis & Peake. We're hosting a ticket-only event to discuss Wills, Trusts and Power of Attorney on Wednesday 12th June at 7pm and admission for Sycamore members is just £5.

It's quite easy to set up a Trust and to nominate a responsible person to look after the affairs of someone on the spectrum, but it's not widely known that parents lose legal rights over their children once they are 18, so it is very important to have the right documents in place to ensure that the affairs of our young people on the spectrum are looked after by someone that we trust.

We're very fortunate that Samantha Hamilton, head of the Private Client Department at Mullis & Peake, will host a seminar on this very important subject on 12th June at the Sycamore Trust UK premises in Dagenham. The 90-minute evening will be split into two parts with Samantha outlining the importance of planning for the future and how to go about it in the first half, with a Q&A session in the second half. It's a ticket only event and we have a strict limit on the number of places. Tickets are £10 each, but Sycamore members pay just £5.

New group just a fortnight away

There's only two weeks to go before our next youth group gets under way. Bravo Group will start on 6th June at our premises in Dagenham and there are a few spaces still available.

The new group is part of our life skills programme for high functioning young people on the spectrum aged 10-16 who are in mainstream education and love in the boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.

The programme aims to teach young people on the spectrum some of the valuable skills that they will need as they go through life, while all the time helping to build their confidence, self-esteem and awareness of the social skills needed to live an independent lifestyle.

The new club is identical to the Rainham based Alpha Group and follows the same module-based programme, starting with travelling and public transport and moving on to other topics, such as basic living skills and safe relationships. The group will meet every Thursday during term time at the Sycamore Trust premises in Dagenham and will also involve some fun activities to keep everyone amused.

Parent & carer training – another session soon

We're holding a Parent & Carer training session this June at our building in Dagenham for people wishing to develop greater awareness of Autism and to offer help in dealing with certain behaviour traits and characteristics. We hosted a training day at the Autism Hub in Romford this week and it was huge success. The next session is once again open to any parent or carer wishing to attend and they are completely free of charge but spaces are very limited so it is essential to book your place(s).

Details as follows;

Monday 17th June 2019 (10am to 1pm)
Sycamore Trust UK, 27/29 Woodward Road, Dagenham, Essex, RM9 4SJ
To reserve a place on 17th June, please call Debbie or Nikki on 020 8517 9317. First come, first served!

City break!

The Autism Ambassadors were invited to City Hall recently and hugely enjoyed the experience. The Mayor of London's Young Londoners Fund has supported the Alpha & Bravo life skills project and GLA staff wanted to know more about us. As always, the best way to introduce both our people and our services is to send in the Ambassadors and they were warmly welcomed by staff at City Hall. We had a look around the building and saw the Mayor of London himself answering questions during a London Assembly. There was even time for a very nice lunch before the Ambassadors delivered their presentation. We look forward to going back!

Stubbers Week fast approaching

It's a Bank Holiday this weekend and the sun is out! That means that Stubbers week is fast approaching. This year, our annual trip to the outdoor adventure centre in Upminster is scheduled for the week of 19th August and we're hoping it will be as good as last year, which was a huge success.
We're expecting it will be as popular as ever so families should look out for the correspondence when it arrives in their inbox or on their doormats shortly. We'd urge everyone wishing to send a young person to Stubbers to respond as quickly as possible as we have a strict limit on places and once all the spaces are filled, there will not be any more.

New for 2019 – there will be a sibling day with brothers & sisters invited to take part and for the first time ever, families will not have to call in to pay their Stubbers fees; we'll be taking credit card payments over the phone!

Volunteers needed

We also need volunteers to help with the groups at Stubbers . The activities are great fun and we'll provide lunch. So if you have any time available to support the young people to enjoy the outdoor activities and even have a go yourself (if you're up to it!) then please email Jean on This email address is being protected from spambots. Parent Support Group - coming soon

Not long now until the next Parent Support Group meetings in June. Redbridge and B&D families are invited to our premises in Woodward Road, Dagenham on Monday 10th June at 10am, while Havering families are welcomed to the Autism Hub in Romford on Friday 14th June at 10.30am. Everyone welcome for tea, coffee and conversation. The subject matter is up to you!

Credit cards accepted!

For some years now, Sycamore Trust members have had to call into the office in Dagenham or send a cheque for membership or Stubbers or any of the other activities that we offer. But we can now offer the facility to pay over the phone using a credit or debit card. Cheques in the post and cash in person are still accepted as are bank transfers but for a quicker way to pay, just give us a call.
